The Aquarium

Also known as: Clerke Aquarium

The Aquarium lies inside the Clerke Reef lagoon and is the usual check-out dive for divers and snorkellers arriving at the Rowley Shoals. Shallow bommies crowded with fish give the site its name, and divers circle the base of a large bommie at about 12 m. Thick staghorn thickets grow here, while some hard corals have been flattened by the strong tides. Giant clams and a wide variety of reef fish are typical, and one writer found a neon purple anemone sheltering juvenile clownfish. The calm water makes it a good place to sort out gear before the outer reef dives.
