Levant II

Also known as: Levant 2 · Cable Ship Levant II

The vessel was built by George Brown & Co. of Greenock as a trawler and fitted out for the Eastern Telegraph Company as a cable layer. She maintained cables linking Malta with Sicily, Libya and Alexandria. When she was being towed to the spoil ground to be scrapped she took on water and sank closer to shore. Local divers rediscovered her around 1999, and she was known only as 'the cable ship' until a photograph identified her. The cable drum sits at the bow, and the busy harbour traffic makes the dive hazardous unless the harbour is closed.
