Silver Caves
North of Cathedral the reef forms a shallow, deeply segmented promontory riddled with caves and grottos. The site takes its name from the huge shoals of silversides that fill the channels and part around divers swimming through them. Horse-eye jacks, great barracuda and other predators hunt the shoals, while creole wrasse, hogfish and filefish add colour. With a torch the grottos reveal red and orange encrusting sponges, basket stars and even rare sclerosponges. The wall drops off beyond the reef top.
