Great Blue Hole
Conosciuto anche come: Blue Hole
The Great Blue Hole is a collapsed limestone cave that formed while sea level was far lower during the ice ages and was flooded when the sea rose again. Jacques Cousteau's Calypso expedition of the early 1970s made it famous, and it is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System World Heritage Site. The dive is a deep, short profile: groups follow the wall down to around 40 m, where an overhang forms a cavern ceiling with stalactites several metres long. Life inside the hole is sparse, but Caribbean reef sharks and sometimes bull sharks are seen at depth. The shallow coral rim, only a few metres deep, holds far more fish and corals and is popular with snorkellers.
