Samran Pinnacles
Also known as: Samran Pinnacle
Samran Pinnacles is a group of submerged granite pinnacles, usually described as three, in open water between Koh Tao and Sail Rock; the site is unmarked and is found by GPS. Its specialty is fish action in the current: thousands of yellowback fusiliers swirl around the rock, together with large schools of jacks, trevally, chevron barracuda, great barracuda and cobia, and whale sharks and queenfish pass in season. The top lies at about 9 to 15 m and the rock meets sand at about 28 to 30 m, with sea fans, whip corals, barrel sponges, anemones and tiger cowries on the rock and large marbled groupers under the ledges. Currents range from mild to strong, so most centres rate it a site for advanced divers. Few centres visit it, and it is usually dived as a stop on a day trip to Sail Rock.
