HTMS Sattakut
Also known as: Sattakut Wreck · HTMS Sattakut 742
The HTMS Sattakut was built as a landing craft for the US Navy in the Second World War, is about 48 m long, took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima, later served the Royal Thai Navy and was scuttled off Koh Tao's west coast in June 2011 as an artificial reef. Its specialty is the intact warship layout: the wreck sits upright on sand at about 30 m, the wheelhouse rises to about 18 m, and two deck guns, rows of portholes and many open entry points remain, which makes it the island's standard site for wreck, deep and nitrox courses. Groupers shelter in the wheelhouse, a school of one-spot snapper hangs below the stern gun, and Jenkins whiprays, barracuda, batfish, scorpionfish and nudibranchs are regular sights. Hin Pee Wee lies less than a minute's swim north of the bow, so many dives combine both. Visibility can be poor and a thermocline can occur near the bottom, and the depth makes it a dive for Advanced Open Water divers, with penetration reserved for divers with wreck training.
