Bezerra de Menezes
Also known as: Naufrágio Bezerra de Menezes
Built in 1874 on the Thames for a railway company, the 56 m steamer hit the rock then called Laje de Colombo, and everyone on board was saved. The bow rests against the rocks with an anchor hawse, the bow winch, chain and a bollard, and the hull outline can be followed along the bottom. Amidships two partly buried boilers remain, and at the stern the propeller hub, rudder and parts of the keel are visible. Older documents wrongly dated the sinking to 1860; dives on the site and newspaper research corrected it. The shallow depth makes it suitable for beginners as well as experienced divers.
