Aquidabã
Also known as: Aquidaban
The Aquidabã, an 80 m ironclad built in England in 1885, sank within minutes after an explosion while anchored in Jacuacanga bay; unstable cordite is the most likely cause. A monument on the Monsuaba point recalls the disaster. On the bottom the hull is broken into many sections from bow to stern, leaning to port, and divers can follow the steel around the ship. Highlights are the conical machine gun tower, the large 203 mm gun turret with one gun still attached and three big boilers in the middle of the wreck. Visibility rarely exceeds two metres and the seabed is muddy, so the wreck is a dive for experienced wreck divers.
