Wax Cay Cut

Also known as: Wax Cut Drift

Wax Cay Cut is the tidal channel off the northern tip of Shroud Cay, and the park boundary runs along it. When the tide is running, the current through the cut reaches more than 2 knots, and many divers rate this high speed drift among the finest in the Caribbean. Divers follow a shallow wall that starts at about 20 ft and reaches around 35 ft, flanked by eel grass and sand on both sides. Dense staghorn, pillar and finger corals and sea fans line the route, and lobsters pile up in the crevices together with large angelfish. Hawksbill turtles and nurse sharks shelter on the lee side of the coral, while southern stingrays and eagle rays work the reef edges.
