Las Cuevas
Also known as: The Caves
Las Cuevas means “the caves” in Spanish, and the name describes the dive: around a dozen caverns are hollowed into the island’s limestone base. Canyons, arches, overhangs and tunnels give divers plenty of routes to explore, and some openings are triangular, resembling Darth Vader’s mask, according to Scuba Diving. Each cave tends to attract different marine life, from glassy sweepers and French angelfish to schools of squirrelfish, along walls covered in orange soft coral. Outside the caves, the reef is also home to jacks, groupers and occasional nurse sharks; the SSI blog also mentions goliath groupers. Operators often use it as the second, shallower dive on a trip to Desecheo.
