Elephant Cave
Also known as: Cave of Elephants
A local spear fisher came across the cave by chance in 2000, and it is now counted among the best known cave dives in Greece. Divers swim through a submerged entrance and follow the main chamber, about 120 m long, to a section where the roof rises above the water and leaves an air chamber overhead. The formations are white and red, the red ones coloured by iron and aluminium oxides in the rock. Bones and molars of deer and of an elephant later named Elephas chaniensis are still embedded in the cave. Visibility inside is described as excellent, so the fossils are easy to make out.
