Opal Reef

Opal Reef is a low-impact tourism zone where only smaller vessels are allowed, so it is rarely crowded. Its crescent shape gives shelter from the prevailing south-easterly winds, which is why operators move divers here when Agincourt is too rough. The reef is known for plate corals, giant clams, turtles, octopus and occasional manta rays. Named sites include Bashful Bommie, Blue Buoy, Ray Ban, Sandbox and Beautiful Mooring. Restoration work such as the Coral Nurture Project has helped keep its coral cover high.
