Stanfield

Also known as: SS Stanfield · Standfield · Nitsa · SS Nitza

The Stanfield sailed under the name Nitsa with coal for the Italian army when it went down near Isla Hormiga, and whether a U-boat torpedo, the Bajo de Fuera reef or a collision sank it is still debated. The hull is almost complete and rests in sailing position on sand, with damage on the starboard side and a huge four-bladed propeller covered in gorgonians. Several dives are needed to see the holds, decks and bridge area, and inside one source reports an engine telegraph still set to full astern. Big groupers and conger eels shelter in the structure. Due to the depth and the strong currents that can hit the site, trimix and technical training are recommended.
