SS Sapona
Also known as: Sapona · S.S. Sapona · Sapona Wreck
The Sapona is a concrete ship launched in 1911 that a hurricane pushed onto the shallow bank behind Turtle Rocks in 1926, and a large part of the hull still rises above the surface. Its later life was colourful: it served rum runners during Prohibition and was later used as a target for military bombing and strafing practice. Underwater the broken hull is crusted with invertebrates and shelters schools of grunts and blackbar soldierfish, while orange cup corals grow inside the bow. Nurse sharks often rest beneath the stern. Because the wreck lies in very shallow water it works for beginners, snorkellers and photographers, and night dives bring out octopus, squid and lobster.
