Salzkammergut Lakes

Austria

Austria's main freshwater diving area, a group of clear, deep alpine lakes led by the Attersee and Traunsee, with year-round diving, several dive bases and a strong technical diving scene.

The Salzkammergut is a lake district in the Austrian Alps, mostly in Upper Austria with smaller parts in Styria and Salzburg, and is the centre of freshwater diving in Austria. The Attersee, the largest lake entirely within Austria at roughly 46 to 48 square kilometres and up to 171 metres deep, has several dive bases at Weyregg and Unterach, signposted entry points and visibility of up to 25 metres. Together with the neighbouring Traunsee, Austria's deepest lake, it has become a meeting point for technical divers. Further sites lie in the Hallstätter See, Grundlsee, Altausseer See and Wolfgangsee. Several lakes require a dive card or club membership, some close during the fish spawning season, and diving in the Toplitzsee is banned. The cold, deep water makes a drysuit advisable.
