Jeju Island

South Korea

Volcanic island off southern Korea where the warm Tsushima Current meets temperate water, creating walls covered in dense soft coral around the islets off Seogwipo, the best diving in South Korea.

Jeju is a volcanic island south of the Korean mainland and the country's main dive destination. Most diving takes place off Seogwipo on the south coast, around small volcanic islets such as Munseom, Beomseom and Supseom, about five minutes by boat from the harbour. Their steep walls and overhangs carry one of the richest soft coral communities in Northeast Asia, and the waters around Munseom and Beomseom are protected as a nature reserve. The warm Tsushima Current mixes subtropical and temperate species, so lionfish and butterflyfish appear alongside sea bream, yellowtail and octopus. Depths around Munseom range from about 8 to more than 40 metres. Water is around 24 to 27 °C in late summer and drops to about 14 to 16 °C in winter. Several dive centres in Seogwipo run daily boat trips. Source: Wikipedia, Jeju Escape, Dive O'Clock, PADI
