Montaña Amarilla
Also known as: Yellow Mountain
The yellow-toned volcanic headland above the site gives it its name, and the seabed below continues the volcanic theme with arches, overhangs, open-roof tunnels and spires standing on pale sand. Local guides navigate by named formations such as La Puerta, a broad arch, La Aguja, a narrow pinnacle, and a hole through the reef called the Eye of the Needle. Yellow sponges colour much of the rock, and a submerged statue of the Virgin Mary lies on the route. Octopus, several moray species, cuttlefish and stingrays are regular finds, garden eels live in the sand and angel sharks rest here mostly in the cooler months. Because the bay is a reserve where motor boats and jet skis are banned, it is also a common choice for first dives and training.
