Cueva de los Cerebros

Also known as: Cave of the Brains · Brain Cave

The broad entrance lies at around 10 to 14 m and leads into a lava tube that runs some 70 m or more into the cliff, with side branches and chambers. Deep inside, the ceiling rises into air pockets where divers can surface in the dark. Rare encrusting sponges that look like brains cover parts of the walls, and fresh water seeping in creates a shimmering halocline. Lobsters, shrimps, bigeyes and resting stingrays live in the dim interior. Swell, darkness and the fragile floor make good buoyancy and calm conditions essential.
