Zabargad Island
Also known as: St. John's Island
The island rises more than 230 m above the sea and blocks the prevailing northerly wind, so the south side is calm enough for overnight moorings and relaxed night dives. Along the southern fringing reef a wall covered in hard and soft corals drops to about 15 m and meets a sandy slope with coral pinnacles that continues to around 35 m. Green turtles come to nest on the beaches, and green and hawksbill turtles are often seen in the shallows. The wreck known as the Khanka, a Soviet MOMA-class vessel, lies on its side at about 24 m with its mast reaching the surface. Narrow fissures cut into the reef wall, and reef sharks and schools of barracuda are reported around the island.
