St. John's Caves

Also known as: Umm Khararim · Um Kharariem · Umm Kharalim · Umm Kahararim · Umm Garahim · Cave Reef · Umm Hararim Cave Reef

The reef is a network of interconnected tunnels, caverns and overhangs whose ceilings open to the surface in places, so sunlight shines into the passages. Most of the dive stays shallow, and the inner area is easiest to explore with a guide who knows the routes. South of the lagoon lies a large mountain coral garden with many fish, including the unusual seamoth on the sand. Lionfish and scorpionfish shelter in the caves, and whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy patches nearby. Liveaboards often schedule both a day dive and a night dive here.
