German Channel

Also known as: Mesikm

German administrators had the passage cut in the early 1900s to ship phosphate, and coral has since overgrown the remains. Diving takes place at the outer mouth, where a sandy bottom with coral heads slopes into deep water. Manta rays come in with the tide to be cleaned by small wrasse, and grey reef sharks use the same cleaning stations. Even without mantas the site offers schools of bigeye trevally and blackfin barracuda, eagle rays, turtles and fields of garden eels in the sand. Fish 'n Fins names November to April as the best diving season, with most manta activity from December to March.
