Whalers Cove

Also known as: Whaler's Cove

Whalers Cove is the access point for all diving at Point Lobos south of Carmel, and only a limited number of buddy teams with a reservation are admitted each day. The cove itself is shallow and in summer thick with kelp, with rocky bottom, sand and scattered boulders near the slippery concrete ramp. Decades of protection mean large rockfish, lingcod and cabezon, while harbor seals tug at fins and sea otters and torpedo rays are common sights. From the cove divers follow the sand channel to Middle Reef, Cannery Point and the deeper reefs beyond, or continue to Bluefish Cove by kayak or small boat. Sources call it arguably the best shore dive in California.
