South Monastery
Also known as: Monastery Beach South · South Monastery Beach
South Monastery is entered where the beach curls north at its southern edge, so divers can enter facing away from the strongest waves. Close to shore the reef is cut by channels and swim-throughs, and the large rocks shelter some of the richest fish and invertebrate life in the region because collecting is forbidden. Farther out a sandy plain at about 70 ft carries scattered rock islands, one of them with a clump of metridium anemones, before the bottom drops into the canyon. Sources still treat the steep beach and plunging surf as a serious hazard and recommend the Monastery Crawl for exiting.
