HMS Maori

HMS Maori was hit by a German bomb in February 1942 while moored in Grand Harbour and sank. After the war the wreck was raised and the forward part was scuttled off Fort St Elmo, while the rest was lost in deeper water during the tow. What remains is a broken section of about 42 m, half buried in sand with its front against the rocky slope. A storm in early 2019 damaged the wreck badly and it can no longer be penetrated. The shallow depth gives long bottom times, but kicked-up silt quickly reduces visibility.
