Rocher du Diamant

Also known as: Diamond Rock · Diamond's rock

The rock is the remnant of an ancient lava dome, a protected natural site where nobody may land, and it lies about 2 km off the Diamant headland. Its signature feature is the fault, a passage roughly 25 to 30 m long that cuts through the base of the rock at about 15 to 18 m and is famous for its play of light. Divers also visit an air pocket trapped in a sponge-lined cave, small caves and arches, and the sheltered plateau known as the piscine, used for first dives. Black gorgonians, sea fans and sponges cover the boulders, while turtles, morays, lobsters, triggerfish and king mackerel are common. Because it stands well offshore the water is usually very clear, but currents can be strong, especially near the opening known as the window.
