Aiguille de Prony
Also known as: Prony needle · L'Aiguille de Prony
The needle is not a coral reef but a mineral tower built where warm fresh water of about 33 °C seeps out and mixes with seawater, precipitating calcium and magnesium salts. Divers spiral slowly up around it, can feel warm water in the friable holes of its walls and pass a second, smaller spire and a formation called the cathedral. The tower is an oasis in a muddy bay, crowded with groupers, scorpionfish, small jacks, chromis and nudibranchs. Luc Besson filmed a sequence of his film Atlantis here, and the needle has been a reserve since 1993. The sheltered bay suits divers prone to seasickness.
