Baron Gautsch
Also known as: Wreck Baron Gautsch
Built in Dundee in 1908, the Baron Gautsch was carrying many passengers, among them families of Austrian officers, from the Bay of Kotor towards Trieste when she ran into the minefield laid to protect the naval port of Pula and sank within minutes. The hull sits upright with the top deck at about 28 m and the seabed near 40 m. Sponges, moss animals and colourful nudibranchs cover the steel, and schools of fish, eels, lobsters, scorpionfish and octopus live in and around it. The wreck is a protected cultural monument, so it may only be dived with dive centres that hold a permit from the Croatian Ministry of Culture, and penetration is limited to the first two decks. Every 13 August a memorial dive with wreaths is held for the victims.
