Califórnia
Also known as: Vapor Califórnia · Vapor Rio de Janeiro
Local tradition told of a ship burned by pirates in 1866, but research by Naufrágios do Brasil matched the remains to the Brazilian paddle steamer Rio de Janeiro, which carried gunpowder and flintlock rifles when she burned and exploded in 1853. The wreck lies about 30 m off the rocky shore at the mouth of the Praia Vermelha bay, largely buried in sediment. Divers can follow the keel with its copper bolts to the broken saddle boiler, the condenser and the remains of the steam engine, while the tallest structure, the frame that carried the paddle shaft, rises to about 6 m. The sheltered position means little current and many fish around the wreck. Because so little is exposed, the wreck rewards divers who know what to look for.
