Serapis Wreck
Also known as: Épave Sérapis · Seraphis · Seraphys
The Serapis was built for the Royal Navy in 1779 with 44 guns, was captured by John Paul Jones during the American War of Independence and later served under the French flag in the Indian Ocean. During a stop at Sainte-Marie a fire broke out aboard, reached the powder store and the ship went down close to the harbour. Its remains were located in 1999 after about two centuries of being forgotten. Today the oversized anchor marks the wreck site, followed by five large cannons, small cannonballs and concreted rum bottles. Marine life has settled on the relics, with pipefish, lionfish, pufferfish, cleaner shrimps and a resident grouper that local guides like to point out.
