Banzai Cliff

Also known as: Banzai

The site lies off the cliff memorial at the island's northernmost point, where currents meet and can run very fast, so operators time the dive by the tide table. A ridge reaches seaward from the point, with drop-offs on three sides. Masa Dive gives its top at about 12 m and the bottom at about 70 m, while the tourism authority describes a wall from 15 m down to 116 m. Schools of bigeye trevally, barracuda and rainbow runners patrol the ridge, and sharks, rays, large tuna and dolphins are reported. Anemones and coral formations cover the wall. Strong north winds make the sea too rough in winter, so the site is open only for a short period in summer, and one local shop refers to it as an elusive site.
