Only the bow section, boilers, engine beds and stern fantail are usually exposed, and they are separated by sand. Divers follow the propeller shaft to find the stern, which should only be attempted when the current is slack. Parts of the wreck can be seen from the boat on a clear day because of the shallow depth. The identity was confirmed when a Hatteras diver recovered the ship's bell.
