Proteus

The Proteus sailed between New York and New Orleans for the Southern Pacific line before it went down; one crew member drowned, and everyone else was rescued by the Cushing. The wreck lies upright and contiguous, and the shaft alley leads divers from the engine area to the high stern with its rudder and huge four-bladed propeller. Three boilers, a spare propeller and an old-style anchor at the bow are other landmarks. Large stingrays with escorting cobia, amberjack and many sand tiger sharks are reported, and visibility is often excellent. It lies less than a mile from the submarine Tarpon.
