Cayman Salvager
Also known as: Cayman Salvage Master · Cayman Salvage
Built in 1937, the vessel served many roles, from cable layer to freighter, and carried Cuban refugees during the 1980 Mariel boatlift before sinking at its dock in Key West. It was raised in 1985 to be sunk in deep water, but the tow line parted and it went down in shallower water; a later hurricane set it upright. The deck lies at about 60 feet and the engine room can be seen at about 80 feet, with the cable spool on the bow still in place. Goliath groupers, moray eels, barracuda, snook and occasionally loggerhead turtles are reported. Currents are often strong and unpredictable, so it is treated as an advanced dive.
