Alligator Reef

Alligator Reef is named after the US Navy schooner Alligator, which ran aground here in 1822 while escorting a convoy. Fish surveys since 1968 have recorded more than 600 species on the reef, and NOAA counted 632 by 2020. The sanctuary preservation area protects a spur-and-groove system, the reef crest and part of a rubble ridge, with some areas only 8 feet deep. Moray eels, spiny lobsters, groupers, nurse sharks and turtles are regular sightings, and Key Dives supports coral outplanting here with the I.CARE project. The lighthouse is clearly visible from the Overseas Highway.
