Alexander's Wreck

Also known as: USS Amesbury · Amesbury

The Amesbury was commissioned in 1943, took part in the Normandy invasion and later served as a high-speed transport before Chet Alexander Marine Salvage bought it for scrap in 1962. While under tow to deep water it ran aground and broke up in a storm, leaving two sections far apart. Deck guns, including a 5-inch mount and twin Bofors guns, are still visible among the debris. Goliath groupers, hogfish, spadefish, snapper and angelfish live on the wreck. Parts of the stern are awash, so divers must watch for boat traffic and sharp metal.
