Ilhéu Negro
Also known as: Gruta e Ilhéu Negro · Gruta do Ilhéu Negro
The Black Islet is made of two big rock blocks that rise from a sandy bottom, and gently sloping slabs connect it with a cavern about 100 m away. The cavern has a wide triangular entrance and a large chamber with fine backlight, home to nudibranchs, starfish, fan worms, narwal shrimp and cardinalfish. Around the islet live parrotfish, damselfish, octopus and moray eels, and Dive Azores describes the sandy area as a nursery for common stingrays. Bluefish, yellowmouth barracudas and grey triggerfish pass in open water.
