Saumur Wreck

Also known as: Le Saumur · Tolentino

Built in Scotland in 1920 as a coal and cargo ship, the Saumur was seized in 1942 and sailed under German and then Italian control before the British submarine HMS Upstart torpedoed it on 21 May 1944 while it carried iron ore. The wreck lies off Port-Vendres, about 200 m from the Astrée. The stern has broken away and lies on its side, while the rest of the hull stands upright with its spare propeller, anchors, machine guns and a bow gun. Anthias, sardine schools, zebra seabream and many conger eels live on the decks, and jewel anemones and orange gorgonians cover the structure. The muddy bottom calls for careful finning, and a full visit needs two or three dives.
