Alice Robert Wreck

Also known as: Le Bananier · Alice Robert

Built in 1934 to carry fruit between the French colonies and Bordeaux and Nantes, the ship was requisitioned in 1942, armed and used by the Germans as the escort SG11 out of Port-Vendres. On 2 June 1944 the submarine HMS Ultor torpedoed it shortly after it had taken soldiers on board, with heavy loss of life. The wreck broke in two: the forward two thirds carry a gun, machine-gun mounts and munitions, and the stern third lies about 150 m further south in deeper water. Anthias, sardine and mackerel schools, large sea bream and very many conger eels live on it, and jewel anemones cover the hull.
