Cap Béar

Cap Béar, crowned by a lighthouse and a semaphore, lies between Port-Vendres and Paulilles outside the marine reserve, and Rederis runs daily trips there from Banyuls. Its bottom alternates between drop-offs and rocky plateaus, more like a garden than a plain wall. The coralligenous habitat is well preserved, with gorgonians, sponges and nudibranchs. Octopus and spiny lobsters are typical, and CAP Port-Vendres shows a leatherback turtle photographed here. Several sites on the south side of the cape stay sheltered when the tramontane blows.
