Re d'Italia

The ship was built in New York for the Italian navy and sank on 20 July 1866 after the Austrian flagship Erzherzog Ferdinand Max rammed her. The wreck lies in open sea and is found only with instruments. It is one of the most important historic wrecks in Croatia and is protected by law; one dive centre requires a special permit from the Ministry of Culture, and the other says the site is currently closed to diving. Only technical divers qualified for depths beyond 100 m can reach it, and large fish gather on the wreck.
