Pirate Reef

Also known as: Pirate

Pirate Reef is an isolated patch of hard coral surrounded by sand in Tekek Bay, between Air Batang and Tekek, and it is one of Tioman's main breeding grounds for reef fish, with swarms of tiny juveniles after the March to May hatching season. A few metres to the north lies an artificial reef of hollow concrete balls placed with support from DHL in 2006, an interesting place to see which corals settle first. Turtles, batfish, barracuda, blue-spotted rays, anthias and glassfish are common, the surrounding sand hides nudibranchs, sand eels and cuttlefish, and night dives often turn up small bamboo sharks. The reef is small enough to circle several times while slowly ascending and rarely has current, so it suits novices, a third dive of the day and days when the outer islands are too rough.
