The Hippolytes
Also known as: Hippolyte Rocks · Hippolyte Rock · The Hippolyte
The Big Hippolyte rises 65 metres out of the sea from a seabed around 100 metres deep, and the smaller Little Hippolyte lies close by. Below about 30 metres the rock is still and almost every surface is covered in anemones, sea whips, sponges and nudibranchs. On the ocean side of the larger island erosion has opened swim-throughs, and a small fur seal colony on its northern side often brings curious seals into the dive. The site is exposed and frequently swept by strong currents, which keeps the visibility high and attracts schooling fish. Divers usually stay at around 15 to 20 metres rather than following the walls towards the seabed.
