Rosaomaira

Also known as: Rosa Maria · Rosaomira

The Rosaomaira was delivering cinder blocks to St. Croix in 1986 when she rolled onto her side, after which she was towed to Butler Bay, 2.7 miles north of Frederiksted, and sunk with explosives. Only part of the charge went off, and the ship turned upright as she sank, so she now lies intact on the sand with the bow facing the shore. Rope, stovepipe and barrel sponges in pink and red cover the hull, and blackbar soldierfish, mahogany snapper, schools of jacks and grunts and French, queen and grey angelfish live on the wreck. A shy seahorse is often found at the stern, and southern stingrays rest on the sand nearby. Together with the Coakley Bay it forms the Deep Wrecks of Butler Bay, chosen as a top Caribbean dive site in a USA Today readers' vote.
