North Star
Also known as: Northstar
North Star sits about a mile east of the Carambola resort on St. Croix's north shore and takes its name from the old sugar plantation on the shore. The wall begins about 75 yards out in roughly 25 feet of water and falls away vertically into very deep water. A large Danish anchor is lodged upside down in the wall at about 60 feet and another lies on the shelf. The wall forms a chain of large coves, so sunlight reaches different sections and lights up sponges, gorgonians and overhangs, which makes the site popular with photographers. Hawksbill turtles, horse-eye jacks, schools of blue tangs and the occasional reef shark are typical, while the shore entry over a rocky, rubble-strewn shoreline without a sand channel is difficult, calls for sturdy booties and is only advised on calm days.
