Point Pinos

Also known as: Sewer Plant Beach · Outer Point Pinos

Point Pinos marks the corner where Monterey Bay meets the open Pacific, and it takes the full force of swell and current. Shore entries over jagged rocks near the old treatment plant are possible only in ideal conditions, which explains the local nickname Sewer Plant Beach. By boat, divers explore large boulders, twisting channels and kelp around the outer edge, where Scuba Diving magazine reports rockfish, feather duster worms and nudibranchs. Much of the shallow inshore area has become urchin barren, but the open position brings a chance of gray whales. Sources rate it suitable only for experienced divers.
