Airplane Wreck

Also known as: Copton Point

The plane is an American two-seater that the manufacturer Lancair gave to Savedra Dive Center, which sank it in 1993 on a patch of sand on the slope to start an artificial reef. The empty hull was weighted with old scuba tanks and the wings with cement, then reassembled under water with lift bags. The fuselage lies flat with both wings detached but still in flying position, and the open cockpit is easy to photograph. It rests near the edge of a wall that drops much deeper, so the dive often continues along the reef. Corals now grow on the plane, and triggerfish, sweetlips, spotted eagle rays and devil scorpionfish are seen around it.
