Cathedral Cave
Also known as: Blue Dome · Ghar ir-Rih · Cave of Wind · Cathedral Cave - Għasri Valley
From the shore divers walk down about 100 steps into the valley and swim out of the gorge before descending, or use the summer ladder at Għar il-Qamħ and follow the wall west; dive centres also anchor in front of the cave by boat. A slope of boulders covered in algae, urchins and brightly coloured starfish leads up into the cave. Inside, the ceiling rises about 15 m above the water, the acoustics are remarkable, and the walls carry delicate corals, sponges and golden zoanthids. At the back a shaft once used to fill the salt pans above is now covered by a slab. The cave faces west, so it is brightest in the afternoon.
