Sunken Cemetery

When Mount Vulcan erupted in 1871, the old cemetery of the town sank beneath the sea, and a giant white cross now marks the spot. The area is a marine sanctuary with coral gardens growing on volcanic rock. Some sources mention remains of gravestones encrusted with growth, while others say little is left that shows it was a cemetery. Turtles, batfish, cuttlefish, frogfish, ribbon eels and blue-spotted stingrays are seen on the reef. Conditions are usually calm, which makes it popular with all levels.
