Sirius Wreck

Also known as: Sirius

HMS Sirius was a 36-gun British frigate that ran aground, burned and sank on 25 August 1810 during the Battle of Grand Port. Her remains lie in the channel off Mahébourg on a sandy, silty bottom down to about 25 m. The wreck is broken up, but many cannons lie exposed together with rivets and cannonballs, and part of the hull is preserved under the silt. Its archaeological value is the main draw, while barracudas, stingrays, pufferfish and sometimes eagle rays live around the debris. Visibility is often only moderate because of the silt.
