St. George Wreck

Also known as: St. George · Saint George Wreck · Saint George

The St. George carried wheat and barley between Norway and the Americas for some 20 years before it was abandoned in Santo Domingo harbour. It was renamed after Hurricane Georges in 1998, bought by Club Dominicus and sunk on 12 June 1999. The hull is about 73 m long and lies in the channel between Bayahibe and Catalina Island, with the top of the funnel near 15 m and most of the ship between 25 and 35 m. Sponges, soft corals and encrusting growth now cover the structure, and schools of fish, barracuda and eagle rays are regularly reported. Operators ask for Advanced Open Water or deep training, and rooms and swim-throughs can be visited by small, experienced groups.
